Tumble-turns, Turbos and Treadmills....

Staying focused over the Christmas and New Year period can be hard enough, but with this recent cold snap, the end of 2009 is going to call for some indoor alternatives...

My start to winter training this year has gone fairly well. I had a couple of days off with a back problem and a few sick days but on the whole its been a steady build over the last 7 weeks.
The end of September saw all swimming switch from 50% lake to 100% pool and the yardage creep up to around the 20km per week mark.
A 50/50 mix of on and off road cycling has worked very well so far, with great improvements technically off road and better cadence on the road.
Running has been strictly an off road affair, with alittle work on my posture and bio mechanics to aid my speed when running on tired legs during Xterra events.
So all in all, the miles are in the bank and I'm ready to tackle the next phase post Christmas. Into the new Year, when training will become more intense and speed based ready for my first few big races in March.

So about now, and my indoor alternatives for the festive period....
Swimming will stay the same, but it may well be time to dust off the turbo trainer (indoor bike stand with resistance) and get down to the gym and use the treadmill for any faster running sessions.. Just because Britain slows down when the snow arrives, it doesn't mean i have too!

All the best for a Happy Christmas everyone,
Macca
